Challenger Team Looking for VolunteersUpdatedWednesday March 23, 2016 byStan Dorsey.
Several years ago, Smithfield Little League developed a Challenger program for children with special needs. This team enables boys and girls with physical and intellectual disabilities to enjoy the game of baseball.
The Challenger team practices baseball skills and plays games against themselves and other Challenger teams in Rhode Island. Children play at their own level. High school students assist each player at every game and practice as a Buddy. The team is always looking for high school students to volunteer and gives students a signed letter showing their volunteer hours of participation at the end of the season. There is no fee for any child to play on this team.
If you know a Smithfield child that would like to play, or if you are a high school student (or the parent of one) who would like to volunteer, please contact Ralph E. Boudreaux Jr., Manager of Smithfield’s Challenger Team, at rebI967@cox.net or 401-523-4472.
