Play Ball! Get Ready for Opening Day 2018
April 28 joint kickoff for baseball and softball will include a parade and ceremony to celebrate new field lighting
UpdatedFriday April 27, 2018 byMike Guillfoyle.
On April 28, for the first time ever, both softball and baseball will participate in a joint Opening Day celebration so that the community may properly thank and recognize those who installed the lights at Whipple Field.
In advance of this historic day in the Town of Smithfield, please carefully review the following information.
Please make sure you drop your player off at St. Michael’s Church no later than 10 a.m. as roads surrounding the Whipple Field Complex and St. Michael’s will be shut down for the parade of players. After you drop off your player with their coach, park your car in one of the approved areas and secure a prime viewing location on the parade route.
Everyone Loves A Parade!
The 2018 Opening Day will begin with a parade of softball and baseball players and coaches that will begin at St. Michael’s Church and conclude in the middle of Whipple Field. Families are encouraged to line the parade route and cheer for the teams as they walk by. Once the teams have passed, all are invited to congregate in the middle of the Whipple complex for a very brief speaking program where the leagues will recognize many of the individuals who volunteered resources and their time to bring lights to the fields at Whipple. See the attached map for the parade route.
Supporting Those in Need in Our Community
Baseball and softball teach more than throwing, catching or hitting a ball. These youth programs also teach good character and the importance of one’s role in our community. Players are asked to bring one (or more) of the following items to St. Michael’s: mayonnaise, ketchup, juices, canned ham, corned beef, beef stew, baked beans, jarred tomato sauce, syrup, mayonnaise, canned or dry milk, cookies & crackers, sugar, coffee, Jello, paper towels, napkins, tissues, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant or shampoo. These items will be donated to the St. Michael’s Food Pantry and the Town of Smithfield Food Pantry and distributed to those in need in our community.
Parking at Whipple Field is first-come, first-served. We strongly encourage families to take advantage of a free shuttle bus that will operate throughout the day from town-approved parking areas. These areas include: Old County School, Georgiaville Beach, Town Hall, Mendes Field, School Department, the V.F.W. Hall and until, 3 p.m., the Portuguese American Club. Parking is prohibited at St. Michael’s Church. Note that parking at Whipple is at your own risk. Beware of foul balls! Carpooling is strongly encouraged. See the attached map for approved parking locations.
Bring Your Appetite!
The grills will be running all day and the concession stand will be fully stocked to feed the thousands that are expected to attend the Opening Day festivities. Remember, concession stand revenue helps support the operations of both leagues.
Forms will be available at Opening Day. However families may pre-order their picture package online. Use the code SLL18 to access pricing for Smithfield Little League. See below for the schedule for team photographs on Opening Day. PLEASE NOTE - times are accurate for photos only. Refer to the SLL website for your team's scheduled game time.
The leagues will also be holding a raffle with dozens of items available for bidding, ranging from New England sports memorabilia to exciting offers at various local businesses. Come ready to bid early and often!
