Keep the Faith: The 2020 SLL SeasonUpdatedThursday March 19, 2020 byMichael Guilfoyle.
Dear Smithfield Little League Players and Families,
Know that we are committed to providing kids in Smithfield a memorable Little League experience this year. While the current situation is presenting challenges, we’ll get through this.
On Monday, Little League International issued a guideline encouraging local leagues to delay the start of the season to May 11. This date, which is now the tentative start date for the 2020 season, coincides with recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As we’ve shared before, the safety of Smithfield Little League players and its fans is paramount as we continue to closely monitor the developing COVID-19, coronavirus, situation.
Maybe it is our optimism and, or, love of the game, but we’re hopeful to be playing baseball at Deerfield, Whipple, Mendes, Willow, McCabe and even LaPerche in the coming months. The Majors and AAA drafts have taken place and the teams are set. The creation of a new and exciting A and AA experience is nearly complete. The development of contingency plans is underway. But most importantly, please know this: our promise to you is that as soon as it is safe to do so, the coaches and kids will charge the many baseball fields in Smithfield as we transition back to what we once knew as “normal” lives.
Like you, I would gladly trade the stress of getting the kids to practice and games in exchange for the current situation. Borrowing a mantra from the 2004 Red Sox, Keep the Faith. We’ll get through this and baseball awaits at the end of this trying time. The kids need baseball. We need baseball. We all need something to which to look forward.
Thank you for your continued patience.
