2021 Smithfield Little League Scholarship

UpdatedSunday February 7, 2021 byStan Dorsey.

In 2020, Smithfield Little League (SLL) was honored to support those former players and volunteers who embody the ideals and values of the league, as we awared the Smithfield LIttle League scholarship to the following deserving young men emabrking upon college or trade school: Ethan Bose, Nick Capalbo, Christian Carmosino, Zach Collins, Sam Greene, Cole McAssey, Alex Niquette, Sam Placido, Zach Semerjian and Justin Tedeschi (pictured, not in order).

We are excited to continue that long-running tradtion this year. One-year scholarships will once again be awarded to eligible individuals to assist with college tuition and/or fees associated with the first year of trade school instruction.

Applicants are encouraged to complete and submit their application online. However, instructions for mailing your application materials may be found at the bottom of this page as well.

In regard to eligibility for a SLL Scholarship, it is important to note that seasons of play is not the only criteria considered. The league believes that an applicant's’ service to the league should be considered equally with playing time. Service could include the number of seasons as an umpire, assisting with our Challenger program, coaching a team or volunteering at various league events or in other league-related capacities that display support for youth baseball in Smithfield.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a scholarship:

  • Minimum of five seasons of play in Smithfield Little League (Note, rec., all-stars and fall ball each count as one "season". For example, if a player played rec. and fall ball, that is two seasons.)
  • Service to the league other than play
    • i.e. Umpire, Challenger Division volunteer, coach, etc.
  • Acceptance to an accredited college, university or trade school.

Please apply online or download and complete the application materials at the bottom of this page and mail no later than Monday, April 5, 2021, to the address at the end of the application.

All applications must include the following:

  • Complete and signed application
  • Character reference or letter of recommendation
  • 500-word, or less, essay

A committee composed of members of the SLL Board of Directors will review all applications. Those selected for a scholarship award will be notified in June during Honors Night at Smithfield High School. Congratulations once again on your upcoming high school graduation and best of luck in your future endeavors.
