SMITHFIELD, R.I. - August 28, 2013 – Smithfield Little League today announced that it is accepting registrations for the 2014 spring season and invites all Smithfield children between the ages of 4-18 as of April 30, 2014 to register for an exciting season of baseball. Registration will close on Tuesday, October 1.
Whether a child has never picked up a baseball or played on All Star teams, Smithfield Little League coaches work with players to ensure a memorable and fun baseball experience. Scholarships are available for eligible families as the league believes that every child, regardless of their family’s financial means, should have an opportunity to play baseball.
"For more than 60 years, Smithfield Little League has provided thousands of young boys and girls the opportunity to learn, play and enjoy the game of baseball,” said president Kevin Bourque. "Little league teaches more than how to hit or catch a ball. As most players are in critical stages of development, the league instills the values of good sportsmanship and good character. The league invites all Smithfield children from 4-18, regardless of ability, to register for the 2014 season.”
Smithfield Little League sponsors a number of divisions including Instructional, T-Ball, A, AA, AAA, Majors, Junior, Senior, Big League and the Challenger Division. According to Little League Baseball, the Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball. Smithfield Little League is among more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide with more than 30,000 participants.
All players 7-12 years of age will be invited to a try out/ skills assessment day on September 28 and October 5. The purpose of the assessment is to ensure that players are placed in the appropriate division to ensure a positive and rewarding baseball experience.
